Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What are the library's hours?
A. The library media center is open during school hours from 7:00a.m. to 2:30p.m. The library follows all holiday and early dismissal schedules.

Q. How do I get to use the library during the school day?
A. Visits during the day are encouraged. You can use the library…
• with a signed Hallway Passport; however, during the lunch periods (4, 5, 6, 7), please come to the library to get a lunch pass before going to the cafeteria.
• during your lunch period. Come to the library to get a lunch pass some time before your lunch period.  If you will be routinely joining us during your lunch, please inform a library staff member so we can make other arrangements.
• during your study hall. Go to study hall and ask to be added to the list of students going to the library. When the group is dismissed, go directly to the library.

Q. How do I get the passwords for the databases?
 A. The latest passwords are available at the circulation desk. You can use the "Email Now" form on the "About Us" page but Mrs. Hooper must verify you are a member of the John Jay community before she contacts you with the passwords.

Q. How long may I have library materials?
A. Library materials are loaned for two weeks. Renewals are available if materials are required longer than the initial couple weeks.

Q. Are there late fees for overdue items?
A. Never.  We just want the item back.  There's a nifty book drop in the library.  Just put your overdue item in there.  No questions asked.

Q. May I use the library after the 1:42p.m. dismissal?
A. Absolutely! You should head to the library as soon as possible after dismissal.  At 2:30p.m., you will be escorted to the main lobby.

Q. What should I read next?
A. Our staff loves to talk about books! Ask for help selecting a new favorite read at the circulation desk. We can also direct you to some great web sites for help.

Q. Why does it take a couple of seconds for stuff to show on some pages of the site?
A. The library pages use lots of widgets.  A widget is small Internet-based program that helps people add all kinds of cool things to web pages, blogs, social networking sites, etc.  Because the page has to figure out what the widget is and wants to do, it takes a couple of seconds.  The benefits of using widgets outweigh the couple of seconds so please be patient.
